Art essay

Since the start of the term, I have been working on an essay that answered a question I chose out of 6 art/music related questions. Here is my essay if you would like to read;

Some people think art is essential to children's learning and others think it is a waste of time?

Imagine walking down the street and you see that beautiful piece of art on the wall, you see a young man playing his guitar begging for money and throw a coin into his hands, as you walk further down you see a group students dancing for charity a put another coin into the box as they thank you and shake your hand, the smile on your face widens with each person who acknowledges you, you come to a stop at young woman in gold who stands like a statue.
Now imagine walking down that street again, but this time none of that is there. The street is silent with small whispers. The plain white wall’s hypnotise you as you walk faster. You see a box with a few coins for a charity and wonder if you should chuck the coin that is jiggling around in your pocket, everyone does the same as each other.

So is the arts important or is it just a waste of time like some people think. My personal opinion is that art is essential to children's learning. It is important to learn the arts, but what would other people say.
Out of 22 students I surveyed, 11 out of 22 do/did art, dance, drama or music classes. 21 out of 22 said that they enjoy music/drama/dance/art. Out of the 22 students that I surveyed, 74% said that they would feel either, sad, annoyed or angry if they could never learn art, dance, drama or music.
So does this prove that the arts is important or is still not as important as maths and literacy. The jobs you can get out of learning the arts are; dancer (of every type of dancing there is) dance teacher (of every type of dancer there is), an actor, an artist, a singer, a musician ( to every instrument there is) and many more. How many of you want to be one of these high earning jobs when you're older. You learn many things from these subjects. If P.E is as important as maths and literacy so should Art, Music, Dance and Drama, don’t you think?

The arts include dance, drama, visual arts and music. Dance is a popular subject in arts. There are many types of dance such as; Ballet, Breakdancing, Disco dancing, Tap dancing, Contemporary and many more. Dance can come in many ways, Peaceful or Strong. People all over the world enjoy dancing. The classic dancing may be all around the world but most countries have traditional dances.
Drama is spread across the world. Drama is in schools and is spread out to adults as actors. Musical. Musical arts is singing and playing instruments.
Music is in all school and everyone listens to music. It spreads a message through the world. Finally visual arts.
The visual arts is painting, drawing, sketching and much more. Art is everywhere, Art is that graffiti you see on the public toilets, art is the canvas hanging in your living room. It tells a different story to everyone. That is a lot of things to learn and some people think isn’t important.

So what do teachers think. Out of the 6 teachers in my school that I surveyed all of them  said that the Arts is important. They say ‘even though at this time we have to teach the arts if we had a choice we would still definitely teach the arts’. Some said;
I think the arts should be taught, it can provide a different way of teaching other subjects in a new context.’
‘I absolutely believe that teaching and learning within the arts is important for students in all schools. Sometimes I use the arts to teach other things (e.g. Sometimes in reading we might do some drama and hot seat the characters from the book). Everyone needs to be exposed to the arts to see if it is something that they enjoy or not. But also to improve in and gain general knowledge about each of the arts.’
So is this enough to prove that teachers, students and myself all agree that we need the arts to keep being taught in our schools. It is important to students learning and helps teachers teach other subjects through the arts.

So in conclusion, dance, drama, music and visual arts should always be taught in schools. It helps both students and teachers to learn/teach basic subjects. Art is an essential part to children's learning. Can you imagine a world without the arts, I can’t.
