English
This week we started off with learning what some words meant. We learnt some maori words and the meaning of some words related to writing. These are the words we learnt:
Inference - finding evidence and hints to understand the text better
1st person - writing from the character's perspective
3rd person - telling what someone else is doing
omniscient - knows everything
theme - moral of the story
ka kite - goodbye
tangi - funeral
kia kaha - stay strong
After learning these words we next read a story called a short story called ka kite, bro. We read through the story while filling out a sheet where you had to write down the characters, setting, timeframe, theme, storyboard and narration. We then had to find the evidence ( a sentence from the story stating that…) for each character and setting. We also had to find evidence for what we thought the theme was. Jacky and I thought the theme was ‘Don’t let others push you around, especially about you're culture’. We left out the narration for next time.
Signs and Signals
On the first week of signs and signals we did a little document called signs and signals - what do we know. On the document it had a table. There were four column’s by two rows (That we had to do). The first column had had a picture in each square. The pictures were some sort of sign or signal. The column underneath it had a couple questions about this picture of a sign or signal. The questions were; Where do you see this type of sign/signal?, what senses are affected?, If so, what aspects communicate its meaning?(Think about colour, shape, speed etc). We filled these in for each picture; There was one that had a Finger running along heaps of little holes, another was a man listening to an old radio in (the pictures in black and white), next a red flare about to lifted to the sky and last of all a heart rate monitor from hospitals. Here is the link If you’d like to take a look yourself: Signs and signals.
We next got two sheets; one with 10 pictures to cut out, and another boxes and labels. The pictures were in shapes and sizes and all sorts of random things. We had to match the pictures to the best suited label. it was hard. Nelle and I had partnered up. the first we had all the pictures in place we though it wasn't right so we changed a couple around and see they would work two. We asked Rebecca (the teacher) if they were all right. She said they were in the right places.Yay!
